FAQ: How Can We Come Up With a Space Plan?
One of the most common questions our retail clients ask us is…
How can we come up with an effective space place?
But first, let us explain what a space plan is, and why your retail business needs one.
In a retail setting, a space plan is a combination of strategically planned techniques and product layouts that lead to an increase in customer retention. A proper space plan will guide customers more easily around the store through product placement, floor plans and constructive layouts.
Let’s get into it. Here are the top 5 factors we consider when setting the stage for your space plan!
Priority of Categories: When starting your space plan, consider placing your product categories in order of priority. Ask yourself: Which products need to be introduced to the customer right away? Which items DON’T need a big introduction to the customer? Can I use certain items to motivate customers to move to the back area of the store? Create a list of priority items using these answers!
Logical Adjacencies: Similar to the first factor, the flow and order of your retail space need to make logical sense, so you can continue the shopping momentum. This means making sure related categories are next to each other (t-shirts next to pants, etc.). Try to visualize each category placement as an add-on to each other; There shouldn’t be any significantly contrasting categories side-by-side.
Architectural Opportunities: What can you do with your wall and permanent space? Find opportunities here to create striking display sections for your products and categories. For example, your windows can be opened, closed, raised, or have hanging opportunities for displays.
Architectural Constraints: Use permanent blockers - such as pillars - as an opportunity to dissect one section from another. While they can limit the original idea of category flow and consumer walkways, these blockers also help you determine which categories should be in each section.
Consumer Behaviours: You know your customer best, and you’ll start to pick up what their shopping tendencies are. These consumer behaviours will determine how you can fulfill their needs while setting up your store.
